General: The Student Impact Model
September is always curriculum month around here as we are preparing to enter the busy world of October. I have been tasked to develop and present a student leadership curriculum for Union High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Their student leadership retreat actually has to have a lottery system to decide the 200 lucky leaders who get to attend. It is an awesome event and a privilege to help with. This curriculum development project has outputted the Student Impact Model: Influence + Class + Spirit = Legacy.
Influence
Everything about leadership begins with influence. It is the core function that defines when and where leadership is happening - for good and bad. Before student leaders can tap into their large reservoir of leadership impact, they need to recognize that they do influence others every day - for good or bad. Their goal is not to be perfect, but to work diligently to make a positive influence on others. This influence manifests itself in small actions (smiles, showing up on time, helping out, etc.) and big actions (coordinating events, helping a friend with a personal struggle, saying no to negative pressures, etc.). Only when a student decides to use their disposal and structured time for good can they begin down the path of making an impact on others.
Class
Making a positive difference is not enough. Its about how you do it, not just that you did it. More and more society is making it acceptable to expose young people to crass, uncivilized and damaging impressions (immature language, violence, dishonesty, adult situations, illegal substances, etc.). These millions and millions of exposures blur the line between what is acceptable and what is not. Young impressionable minds are being convinced that is the way the world is so that is they way I should be (because I desperately want to fit in.) This is creating a society without class. When a student can lead others with dignity, respect, morals and etiquette, they have literally entered into a class of leadership few have the ability or interest to enter (student or professional). The impact here reaches far beyond school projects and events. It stretches into the homes, relationships, work ethic and decision making of everyone they influence.
Spirit
Loyalty without enthusiasm is powerless. Spirit is the leader's tool used for engaging, motivating and empowering their group. This is more than cheer leading, sign creating and giving high fives. Spirit is carrying yourself with a sense of purpose and energy. It is attractive and inspiring. People do not follow the timid. They follow the bold, risk-takers and energetic. Spirit is also the creation of culture. The number one rule in leadership is "everything is your fault." When leaders carry themselves with a spirited attitude it creates an active and passive impact that lifts the entire community to want to do the same.
Legacy
Directed and positive influence plus acting with class combined with a sense of spirit equals a legacy of servant excellence. When our student leaders follow these guidelines, they are not just making an impact today. They are leaving a trail of excellence and a legacy that will last for years in the hearts and minds of future leaders.
